Brazil’s northeast coast offers some of the most reliable wind in the world — steady 18–35 knots from July to January. The trade winds blow side-onshore almost daily, creating perfect conditions for both freestyle and wave riders. With air temps around 28–35°C and water averaging 26–28°C, you can ride in boardshorts all season long. Early months bring full lagoons and flatwater, while later in the season the sandbanks shift and waves come alive — endless summer, guaranteed.

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Brazil.

  • Depending on your nationality, you may need a tourist visa or e-visa to enter Brazil. For example, as of 10 April 2025, nationals of the United States, Canada and Australia now require a visa (or e-visa) for tourism entry into Brazil.
  • For many other nationalities the previous visa waiver still applies, but this should be checked in advance via the official Brazil consular website.
  • If eligible for a visa-exempt entry, travellers are typically granted up to 90 days stay at first entry, and may in some cases extend to a maximum of 180 days within a 12-month period.

Upon arrival, you will be stamped by Brazilian immigration and should keep any arrival documentation (e.g., arrival card) handy until departure to show at customs/immigration if asked.

We strongly advise contacting the Brazilian embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date and nationality-specific requirements.

  • The official currency in Brazil is the Brazilian Real (R$).

  • It’s advisable to check the current exchange rate before exchanging money or withdrawing locally.

Brazilian cuisine is rich, diverse and regionally influenced. On the northeast coast, seafood is central — expect grilled fish, shrimp, and moqueca (a coconut-based seafood stew).

Meat lovers should visit a “churrascaria”, where you can enjoy an endless rotation of grilled meats.

Breakfasts usually feature fresh tropical fruits and juices, varying with the season — a perfect energy boost for long kite sessions.

The main season runs from end of July to January, when the trade winds blow almost daily with 90–95% reliability. Peak months are September to December, offering 18–30 knots of steady wind and warm water.

Brazil’s northeast is a kitesurfer’s paradise, there’s everything for evereyone. Top spots include Icaraizinho (lagoon + waves), Taiba (waves + freestyle lagoon), Jericoacoara (flat + waves + vibrant nightlife), Tatajuba (lagoon + waves), Barra Grande & Macapá (flatwater + lagoons), Galinhos (uncrowded downwinders), and the remote beauty of Atins and Lençóis Maranhenses.

Yes! Many spots have wide sandy beaches, shallow water and steady side-shore winds, which make learning safe and fun. Popular beginner-friendly areas include Pontal do Maceió, Parajurú, Taiba and Praia de Patos (in Icaraizinho).

Expect warm tropical water (26–28°C), air temperatures around 28–35°C, and steady side-on-shore winds ranging between 18 and 35 knots. Conditions range from butter-flat lagoons to playful shore break and clean wave spots — ideal for freeride, freestyle, and wave riding. No wetsuit needed.

You can bring your own kites, but rentals are available in most major spots. We recommend packing at least two or three kite sizes (men: 8m & 11m, women: 6m & 9m depending on weight) to cover the full wind range. Bringing spare parts is very useful, as finding them here isn’t so easy.

A downwinder is when you ride with the wind along the coast, passing by wild beaches, river mouths, lagoons and wave spots, stopping overnight in different villages, covering kilometers stunning nature during a certain amount of days. Brazil is not only famous for them, but the only destination in the world where you can travel along the coast for so many kilometers — from half-day runs to multi-day safaris covering 200+ km. They’re a must-try for intermediate to advanced kiters.

Start by picking your region — Rio Grande do Norte (São Miguel do Gostos, Galinhos, Soledade, etc.)  Ceará (Cumbuco, Taiba, Icarai, Preá, Jeri, Tatajuba, etc.), Piauí (Barra Grande and Macapá) or Maranhão (Arpoadro, Atins, Lençóis).
