Wind and Weather in Mykonos

Mykonos is one of the windiest islands in Greece, famous for its powerful Meltemi wind that dominates the summer months from June to September. Blowing consistently from the north and northwest, the Meltemi picks up by late morning and can reach 18–35 knots in the afternoon — especially strong in July and August, when wind probability exceeds 90%. The airflow is clean and steady across the island’s main kite beaches, delivering long, reliable sessions under crystal-clear Aegean skies.

Temperatures sit comfortably between 26–33 °C in the air and 22–26 °C in the water, meaning no wetsuit is needed for most of the season. The dry, breezy climate keeps even the hottest days pleasant, making Mykonos a dream for endless summer riding. With strong, consistent wind, warm seas and sun-drenched beaches, Mykonos offers pure Meltemi-powered energy — perfect for freeride, freestyle, and big-air sessions in true Greek island style.

Where to Kite in Mykonos

Mykonos may be famous for its nightlife, but it’s also home to some of the best kitesurfing beaches in the Cyclades, powered by the same steady Meltemi wind that makes Naxos legendary. The main hub is Korfos Bay, located just a few minutes from Mykonos Town. Here, the wind blows completely onshore (NW/N/NE) into the bay forming choppy waters and nice long swells, perfect for freeride and big air sessions. Korfo’s beach is home to all the big air pro-riders who come here to train during the summer months for the different competitions. On the island’s noth coast, Ftelia Beach offers stronger wind and small waves, making it ideal for experienced riders seeking a wild, open-water feel.

For beginners, several kite schools operate around Korfos, offering safe instruction and rescue support. When the wind turns up, advanced riders can enjoy long tacks and big-air sessions against the backdrop of classic whitewashed houses and deep-blue Aegean views. Whether you’re here for progression or pure Meltemi-powered fun, Mykonos delivers a kitesurfing experience that blends island energy, reliable wind, and stunning scenery.

Korfos Beach: The Windy Playground Near Town

Korfos is one of the most consistent and popular kitesurfing spots on Mykonos. Located just 2.5 km from Mykonos Town and the airport, it’s easily accessible by car or scooter. The beach is well-known for catching the full force of the summer Meltemi wind — full onshore from the northwest, north and northeast — with wind strengths typically ranging between 15 to 40 knots.

The bay is sandy and shallow near shore, making it beginner-friendly for lessons and freestyle. Further out, the water becomes choppier with moderate wind-driven waves, ideal for intermediate and advanced riders who enjoy big air action.

💡 Tip: During very strong wind days, expect gusts and be cautious near the rocky edges of the bay. Stick to the middle launch area and use booties to avoid hidden rocks.

  • Wind: Side-onshore (NW/N/NE), steady but can be gusty on strong Meltemi days
  • Water: Shallow near shore; choppy to wavy
  • Best For: Beginners, intermediate freeride, advanced big air
  • Facilities: Kite school, rescue service, gear rental, cafes, showers

Ftelia Bay: The Hidden North Shore Gem

Tucked away on the island’s north side, Ftelia Bay is more exposed to the open Meltemi, offering cleaner wind, especially in July and August. The spot is a bit more remote and less crowded than Korfos, with small waves that form over the wind-driven swell.

While Ftelia is rideable for most skill levels, launching can be tricky due to limited beach space. It’s a solid choice if you want wind, space, and a rugged coastal vibe.

  • Wind: Strong Meltemi (NW/N/NE), cleaner and steadier than Ornos
  • Water: Choppy to small waves
  • Best For: Intermediate and advanced riders
  • Facilities: Nearby tavernas, parking, more remote atmosphere

Kitesurfing in Rinia. Wild Kitesurf spot near Mykonos

Rinia: Wild perfection

Rinia is a small inhabited island to the West of Mykonos, only accesible by boat. It’s the perfect wild playground delivering great conditions, specially for intermediate to advanced riders who want to enjoy the strong meltemi winds and boost big airs.

On it’s east coast, we find a stunningly beautiful spot with clear turquoise waters offering offshore winds and perfect butter flat water conditions. It’s best to visit this spot on strong Meltemi days, as on mild wind days you’ll find to many boats anchoring here, making it complicated for kiting.

  • Wind: Strong Meltemi (NW/N/NE), cleaner when it’s N/NE.
  • Water: Perfect flat water to choppy further from the shore
  • Best For: Intermediate and advanced riders
  • Facilities: Wild island – no structures around.
