From end of July to January, steady trade winds blow almost every day, averaging 18 to 28 knots with a near-perfect side-onshore direction. The “Leste” wind usually starts late morning and builds steadily through the afternoon, peaking just in time for sunset sessions. Warm tropical air (around 30 °C) and water temperatures near 27 °C make wetsuits unnecessary year-round. Spotguide

Where to Kitesurf in Cumbuco

Cumbuco Beach

This 4 km stretch of white sand is lined with coconut palms and offers wide open space at low tide and a narrower shoreline at high tide. Its close proximity to Fortaleza makes it a busy hub — especially on weekends and during high season — so always stay alert to swimmers and fellow kiters enjoying the Cumbuco kitesurfing.

Expect mildly choppy seas with flatwater pockets and small waves forming around the sandbanks at low tide. As the tide rises, the waves grow and the water becomes rougher. The further downwind you go, the bigger the waves get.

Lagoa de Cauipe

Located 7 km outside the village and nestled right next to the ocean, this lagoon is separated by a thin sandbar and offers glassy flat water — perfect for beginners and freestylers. It’s a popular training ground for pro riders, so don’t be surprised if you spot a few flying through the air. Arrive early though — by midday the spot tends to get crowded.

Cauipe Downwind Session

Another great option is to ride downwind from Cumbuco to Lagoa de Cauipe. On the way, you can enjoy some small wave action, then finish the day in the lagoon. Around the lagoon, you’ll find several laid-back bars and food spots — the perfect place to refuel and watch the pros put on a show.

Praia do Pecém

Just downwind from Cumbuco, Praia do Pecém delivers a calmer atmosphere compared to the busy Cumbuco kitesurfing stretch. Expect wide beaches, steady side-onshore wind, and playful waves — perfect for long, easygoing sessions.

Low tide reveals smooth launch areas and neat wave lines; at higher tide, waves grow into solid kickers. Wind is reliable July–January and often slightly stronger than further up the coast.

Basic beach bars and kite pousadas keep things relaxed — great for a slow day or a downwinder stop.
