Trip Overview

Combo Adventure – Dates are personalized for each group – Minimum of 3 riders required

If you’re looking for the real downwind adventure — one that lets you experience all the best kiting spots along Brazil’s northeast coast — look no further.

We recommend a route that covers around 400 km by kite, crossing three incredible states: Ceará, Piauí, and Maranhão. Ceará offers dreamlike, deserted beaches where steady winds carry you past lagoons and hidden river mouths. In Piauí, you’ll discover Barra Grande, a true kiteboarding paradise. Then comes the vast Parnaíba Delta, the largest delta in the Americas, with its maze of tiny islands and lush, Amazon-like jungle.

The journey ends in a charming coastal village at the edge of the spectacular and world-famous Lençóis Maranhenses National Park — an unforgettable finale. Here, time slows down as you kite among towering dunes and crystal-clear lagoons, completely immersed in nature. It’s the kind of place you’ll never want to leave.

Adventure, nature, and adrenaline — that’s what this trip is all about. You’ll finish craving more and realizing it’s the simple things in life that make it extraordinary.

To explore the coastline of these three states, we recommend a minimum of 15 days. Below, you’ll find our suggestion for the ideal program.

Itinerary

Your Route. Your Rhythm. Your Adventure.

This is not a fixed itinerary — it’s your story, written by the wind.

Each group sets its own pace, carving a custom path along more than 400 km of Brazil’s northeast coast — from the wild dunes of Ceará, through the river deltas of Piauí, to the surreal lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses in Maranhão.

Some days are fast and full of distance — 50 km of pure downwind flow through rolling waves and empty beaches. Others are slow, spent exploring hidden lagoons, practicing freestyle, or soaking in village life over an ice-cold caipirinha.

You’ll ride beside Freeride Kitesurf’s local guides, with 4×4 and boat support tracking your every move. In the evenings, you’ll arrive at handpicked pousadas or eco-lodges — hammocks, seafood and sunsets that make the miles worth it.

No two safaris are ever the same — that’s the magic. Whether you want to push limits or just live the rhythm of the wind, this journey adapts to you.

This is the Personalized Kite Safariyour adventure, your way.

The Crew & Guides

Local Knowledge. Global Experience. Total Support.

Behind every Freeride Kitesurf downwinder is a passionate team that lives and breathes Brazil’s wind and waves. Our guides are seasoned riders who have spent years exploring this coastline — locals who know every lagoon, river mouth and sandbank by heart.

They don’t just lead the route — they ride beside you, keeping the pace smooth, safe, and full of fun. Each group has at least one in-water guide, supported by 4×4 drivers following along the beach and, where needed, boat crews for river crossings and the Parnaíba Delta. Radios and GPS keep everyone connected at all times.

Our team also includes logistics specialists and local partners who handle every detail behind the scenes — accommodation, hydration and snacks, transfers and equipment support — so you can focus entirely on the ride.

With Freeride Kitesurf, you’re not joining a tour — you’re riding with friends who know the coast inside out. Passion, safety, and pure stoke — that’s what drives our crew.

Who It's For

  • Intermediate to advanced riders comfortable with 30–60 km downwind days
  • Groups of 3+ friends looking for a private adventure
  • Riders who want to explore lagoons, waves, river mouths, and dunes
  • Adventurers seeking a full northeast Brazil experience in one trip
The accommodation on the kitesurf safari is clean, comfortable, and designed for relaxation after long days on the water.

Accommodation & Meals

Along the route, you’ll stay in handpicked pousadas that reflect the soul of Brazil’s northeast coast: welcoming, locally owned, and always close to the water. These aren’t just places to sleep, but part of the cultural journey: from barefoot luxury to laid-back surf vibes.

Breakfast is included daily, and we’ll do our best to accommodate dietary preferences. In the evenings, relax with your crew, enjoy fresh seafood and cold caipirinhas, and swap kite stories under the stars.

What about safety on the water?

Your safety is our top priority. Each kite safari includes full 4×4 support and experienced local guides riding with the group. However, not all beach sections are drivable due to mangroves, rivers, or cliffs; during those moments, you’re free to hop in the car if needed.

We keep group sizes between 3 and 12 riders, with 1–2 guides in the water depending on group size. Our team monitors conditions closely, and if any stretch feels too advanced, riders can safely skip it by land.

Our goal is simple: maximize the adventure, without compromising on safety.

4x4 support vehicles follow the downwinder along the beach whenever possible to ensure rider safety.

What Kitesurf equipment should I bring?

Bring well-maintained equipment, as repairs can be tricky in remote areas. Two boards and up to four kites per rider are fine. We highly recommend a spare bar, extra lines, repair kit, and replacement footstraps. We carry some tools and spare parts, but can't guarantee compatibility with every brand. Want to mix it up? Bring both twintip and waveboard if you ride both; you’ll have plenty of chances to switch it up. With water temps around 26–28°C, a wetsuit isn’t needed. We provide long-sleeve lycras. Booties are optional, but handy for beginners. Don’t forget your valve adapter if you use a non-standard kite system.

Customization Option

The Combo Safari is all about flexibility. For groups of three or more, we can adapt the journey to match your vision — whether that means extending your stay in Barra Grande, adding extra days in the Parnaíba Delta, or spending more time kiting the lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses. You can also choose upgraded accommodations along the way to make the adventure as comfortable as it is wild. Experience the full northeast coast your way — personalized, seamless, and with full support from our expert team.

My first experience of an organised downwinder in Brazil. Fantastic experience only possible due to the amazing people and organisation for the Trip. Bruno and his crew went over and above dealing with our every needs. We litterally had to turn up and kite in the most amazing spots I have ever visited. Highly recommended and we will definitely be back.

My two adult kids and I just finished an absolutely amazing 7 day downwinder on the wild and beautiful coast of Brazil with Free Ride Kite Surfing. Mateus (our guide) and George (our driver) were a fantastic team: kind, friendly, competent, with great local knowledge and just the right balance of helping us when we needed it without being intrusive. Garcia and his team are totally trustworthy and I could not recommend them more highly.

Just finished an epic trip with Freeridekitesurf- the classic downwinder. Great kiting, great people, super well organized. The guides were amazing (thank you Jo!). Because of the guides local knowledge, we hit the best spots at the best time, taking all the guess work out of the trip. I also really liked the pace - two nights in each poussada slows the pace and allows you to enjoy more of the spots. I look forward to another trip with Garcia & his team!

I had the most amazing safari trip with Freeride Kitesurf in November 2022, and met new friends, enjoyed kiting downwind every other day instead of every day, loved the wave spots en route, and the daily caipirinhas of course. We stayed in some gorgeous pousadas and hotels along the way and our guide Bruno was great company and made everything go smoothly.

FAQs

Our private downwinders are designed for small groups — the minimum is 3 riders, and we typically host up to 12 participants. The ideal group size is 4–8 kiters for a great vibe and seamless logistics.

These safaris are best suited for intermediate to advanced riders, but no previous downwind experience is required. Riders should be confident riding independently in various wind and wave conditions. If you're a beginner or unsure, reach out — we may have options like coaching add-ons or gentler routes.

Our full three-state journey from Ceará to Maranhão takes around 15–22 days, depending on your pace and preferences. If you have less time, we can create a shorter, one-state itinerary (e.g. just Ceará or Piauí) from 7–12 days.

No problem. Every itinerary is flexible — it’s your trip. You can add rest days, stay longer in favorite spots, or skip sections by riding in the support vehicle. Just let us know in advance or chat with your guide during the trip.

You should bring 2–4 kites, 2 bars, and at least one board (two if you twintip and surfkite). We recommend bringing spare lines, straps, and any non-standard valve adapters. Booties aren’t needed, but we do suggest a long-sleeve lycra for sun protection. See our full gear guide above.

Unfortunately, we don’t offer private downwinders for solo riders. But if you’re traveling alone, let us know — we may be able to match you with another group or offer a spot on a planned safari.

The wind season runs July to December, with consistent wind 95% of the time. The most popular months are August to November, when conditions are prime for long-distance downwinds.
