Jericoacoara,

better known as “Jeri”, is without a doubt a must on your bucket list. Discovered in the 80s by windsurfers in search of perfect conditions, this little gem of a town—hidden among endless sand dunes—makes anyone feel like an explorer stepping into the unknown.

The Jeri we know today has grown into a world-famous destination, not only for windsurfing and kitesurfing but also for travelers from around the globe. Only accessible by 4×4 due to its remote location, it’s a wonder how this enchanting village offers such a wide variety of top-tier pousadas and a fantastic selection of restaurants.

Life in Jeri moves slowly during the day as everyone heads to the beach or nearby lagoons, but when night falls, the town comes alive. Late in the afternoon, no matter the season, people gather at the main beach to watch local capoeira dancers and climb the nearby dune to catch the iconic sunset.

As evening sets in, Jeri’s main square fills with locals and tourists alike. Bars buzz with live Brazilian music, and people stroll the sandy streets with a caipirinha in hand, browsing artisan stalls and charming boutiques. It’s no surprise that many travelers end up staying longer than planned — once you step into the barefoot, laid-back lifestyle Jeri has to offer, you may never want to leave.

Wind and Weather in Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara, or simply “Jeri,” is one of Brazil’s most iconic destinations — and the wind here is as legendary as the sunsets. From July to February, the steady “Leste” trade wind blows day after day, funneled perfectly along the dunes and coastline. In Jericoacoara itself it’s forbidden to kitesurf, as the only spot with good direction is reserved for Wing foiling and Windsrufing. At this spot located in Jeri’s main beach, you can expect 18 to 35 knots of side-shore / offshore wind that builds from late morning and peaks through the afternoon, making for long, action-packed sessions. With air temperatures around 30 °C and water near 27 °C, riding here means boardshorts, bikinis, and pure tropical freedom. Whether you’re launching from the main beach or heading out for a downwinder toward Guriú or Tatajuba, Jericoacoara delivers powerful, predictable wind in one of the most stunning natural settings in Brazil.

Where to Kitesurf in Jericoacoara?

kitesurfing at a beach near Jericoacoara with strong side-onshore wind and waves

Préa and Barrinha

These two beaches form a 15 km stretch where the wind consistently blows between 20 and 35 knots. At low tide, you’ll find flat water, and as the tide rises, waves of 1–1.5 meters begin to roll in. The go-to experience here is a downwinder from Barrinha or Préa to Jericoacoara. It takes about an hour (depending on your level), with the option to stop just before Jeri. You’ll finish the ride just after the “sunset dune,” where a 4×4 or buggy will be waiting to pick you up.

Duna do Pôr do Sol (Sunset Dune)

Just behind this famous dune, which has slightly been eroded over the years, you can kite without needing a buggy or 4×4 thanks to its proximity to the village. Here the wind is completely offshore, therefore the dunes can make the wind slightly gusty, but head a bit further west and the breeze becomes more consistent with the wind direction changing to sideshore. Sunset sessions here are magical — especially at high tide, when waves break over the nearby sandbanks and a small lagoon forms behind the dune with a narrow entrance to the sea.

Guriú’s river mouth

About 10km downwind from Jeri, Guriú’s rivermouth forms perfectly flat lagoons, making it a favorite among pros who often train here for competitions. Expect smooth water and lots of trick action.

Good kitespot near Tatajuba Brazil

Tatajuba

A true kite paradise, but highly tide-dependent. At medium tide, the rideable area is smaller — but this is when you get the best flatwater conditions. At high tide, the kite zone expands but becomes choppier, except for a lagoon that forms on the west side where a few riders can enjoy silky flat water. And if all else fails, you can always cross the beach at low tide and kite in the open sea. Wind here tends to be strong, but it can also get gusty the closer you get to the village.

Yes — while the main beach is for windsurfers and wing foilers only, nearby spots like Guriú, Tatajuba and Barrinha offer perfect flatwater and safe learning conditions.

Most riders bring 2 kites. - Men: 7m & 9m - Women: 5m & 8m - Winds are strong and steady, so smaller kites are usually the go-to.

Kitesurfing is not permitted on the main beach of Jericoacoara, but just behind the Sunset Dune or a few minutes away by buggy you'll find fantastic wave and flatwater spots.

Yes, Jeri is a major stop (or endpoint) on several downwind routes — including the Classic and Classic Express Safaris. You can also start or end in Jeri depending on the route.

Bohemian, barefoot, and buzzing at night. Think sandy streets, live music, artisan stalls, and unforgettable sunsets.

Not at all. Air temps range from 28–38°C and the water stays a warm 26–28°C year-round.

The village is only accessible by 4×4 due to the surrounding dunes. Transfers are included in our holiday packages.

The main Jericoacoara kite area sits just behind the famous sunset dune, where you can launch without needing a buggy or 4×4. Conditions here vary with the tide — flatwater at mid tide and small waves near the sandbanks at high tide. For more consistent wind, many riders head a little west of the dune, where the breeze turns sideshore and smoother. Beyond that, downwind routes connect Jeri with Préa, Guriú, and Tatajuba, making Jericoacoara kitesurf sessions incredibly diverse. Whether you prefer flatwater or waves, there’s always a place to kitesurf Jericoacoara that matches your style.

Yes — but it depends on the tide and where you ride. Jeri itself has offshore wind, which can create clean faces when the swell lines up, especially around high tide near the sandbanks. For most riders, the best wave options are found just west of the dune or along the downwind route toward Guriú and Tatajuba. The combination of offshore wind and shifting sandbars means jericoacoara kitesurf sessions can deliver surprisingly good wave sections, especially for strapless riders. And if you want more consistency, Préa usually offers larger, more predictable waves for Jeri kitesurfers looking to push their level.
